Redneck Tendencies!

Have you ever looked down upon someone because they seemed redneck and then turn and prove to the world that you yourself could could possibly be the ultimate redneck hands down?  It always comes back to bite you in the butt.  Always!  Best not to talk about people.

We water in our area with irrigation.  We have been patiently waiting to get water and finally when the ditch was full, I flooded the yard.  We had a nice little pond in the front.  Made me want to throw in a couple of ducks.

My two “wheelchair” children decided they were going to go cool off.  Now….I have found things in the past years floating in this water that would turn your stomach.  One year we ended up with a big, rotted carp laying in the yard and then there was the year the bloated skunk came floating through the culvert.  It made my stomach turn to think these two children wanted to play in the water.

After giving them the warning to not get water in the mouth, etc. and to make sure they showered after getting out of the water they were off for some fun.

A few minutes later I heard suspicious laughing.  That is never good when these two are involved.  I looked out the window and they had gotten my other son’s wooden boat out of the shed and was floating around the front yard.  They were pushing and pulling each other.

I guess this was not enough “speed” for them so they decided they were going to go across the street, put the boat in the irrigation ditch and float down.  They took a Lacrosse stick and duct taped a paddle to the end so they could row the boat.

I am sure at this point in our lives, no one around here has to ask..”Whose kids are those?”  If someone is going to do something totally nuts and crazy, it will be my children.  Not sure how this went.  I didn’t even look out the window.  Some things are better if you pretend they didn’t happen.

I have been warned that my two boys are planning a  stunt of riding down the road on their unicycles in their Halloween costumes………………(the dots represent a very long silent pause).  Even with costumes on, everyone will know they are my kids.

I can run, but I cannot hide.  AAAAHHH.

I Am Getting Old!

So, this past weekend was spent with a group of 14-18 year old boys and girls.  Our church has a youth conference where we get together with kids in this age group and have a lot of fun and also help the kids grow spiritually.

This weekend was spent at Snow College in Ephraim, UT.  Our first activity involved getting wet.  It was close to 90 degrees so it felt great.  Had I known what a fool I was going to make out of myself beforehand there are certain activities I probably would have skipped.

This picture is worth a thousand words.  My daughter says it was the best face plant ever.  I don’t have a picture of the one I did a day later on a cement sidewalk.  That probably topped this one.

This was a fantastic conference.  We had so much fun.  When you are with kids, you do things you normally wouldn’t do and there are some things that were done at youth conference that will stay at youth conference.  An oath of silence has been taken.

Although, despite some of the attempts at bringing back my youth……I still require 8 hours of sleep per night.  Three hours just don’t cut it.  I can’t imagine how these girls kept going like energizer bunnies on 3 hours of sleep.  Amazes me.

The funnest part of this, is that I got to spend it with two of my children and despite them being embarrassed by some of my clutzy stunts, I think we all enjoyed being there together.  It was a party.  I would do it again in a heart beat, I just need time for everything to stop hurting.

Well I have had it!  I decided that since this stupid weather in Utah can’t decide to warm up that I was going to think positive and put up my pool thinking the theory “When I wash my car, it will rain” will apply.  Only it will be “I will put up the pool so the sun will shine”.

This will probably be wishful thinking.  I will probably be scraping the snow off of it next week.  Today might be the warmest day in the next week to even swim and the water is freezing cold.

The official sign of summer is when the pool goes up.  In years past come March my kids would start asking, “When are we going to put up the pool?”.  Of course March in Utah is never a good time to put up a pool or even come within 15 ft. of an outdoor pool.  We are never that lucky.  Then it was April, then May and this year…no one has asked.  I was the one taking the initiative to do it.

I remember as a kid living in  Florida that everyday we went to the public pool.  It was great!  Anyone under 17 got in for free.  That was the life.  Of course it was about 115 degrees.  We would have died if we wouldn’t have been able to.  I think letting people in free to the pool was the city’s way of avoiding mass deaths during the summer months.  I remember swimming one day and seeing a guy do a belly flop off of an 80 ft. platform.  It didn’t kill him, but nearly.  He laid on the side of the pool for about 1 hour.  That single event made me never want to try high diving.

I truly believe that I am a fish in human clothing.  I love water and swimming.  This has not always been the case.  When I was 10 I almost drowned while living in Florida.  The scariest event of my life to date.  So it took some time for me to get over the fear of water.  I still do not like diving anymore.  If I don’t come up as fast as I should I start to panic.  Other than that, I am fine.  I even joined the high school swim team to get over my fear of water and to be able to have a class at school that I could play in the water for an hour.

I remember at age 17 we traveled to Florida for Christmas.  It was weird to see a Christmas without being in 5 feet of snow.  The weather was a balmy 72 degrees.  To Utahns 70 degrees in December is something you take advantage of.  So like a bunch of nut jobs, we went swimming in the ocean.  The Floridians walking the beach thought we were completely insane, but how many times to you get to swim in the ocean while living in Utah?  Oh, that would be  NONE!!!  I live near a carp invested river and that is the closest to a beach I get.  Of course we joke about our “beach front” property.  More like Redneck beach front property.  I truly believe that I have probably missing seeing one of those redneck houseboats floating down the river.

Got to love summer.  One of my favorite seasons of the year.  Although it does bring some sadness this year.  It will be the first summer for 19 years  that I will not be at home with my kids all day doing that things you do when it is warm. This brings sadness to my heart.  I am almost done with school and hopefully will not miss another summer with them again.  The realization of how hard this would be hit yesterday, their full day at home and I was at school.  It nearly brought me to tears.  Being a stay-at-home mom has been the best job I have had for 19 years.  No, it doesn’t pay much, but the benefits and awards so outweigh the monitarial compensation.  I have truly been blessed to do this for so many years.
