I Am Getting Old!

So, this past weekend was spent with a group of 14-18 year old boys and girls.  Our church has a youth conference where we get together with kids in this age group and have a lot of fun and also help the kids grow spiritually.

This weekend was spent at Snow College in Ephraim, UT.  Our first activity involved getting wet.  It was close to 90 degrees so it felt great.  Had I known what a fool I was going to make out of myself beforehand there are certain activities I probably would have skipped.

This picture is worth a thousand words.  My daughter says it was the best face plant ever.  I don’t have a picture of the one I did a day later on a cement sidewalk.  That probably topped this one.

This was a fantastic conference.  We had so much fun.  When you are with kids, you do things you normally wouldn’t do and there are some things that were done at youth conference that will stay at youth conference.  An oath of silence has been taken.

Although, despite some of the attempts at bringing back my youth……I still require 8 hours of sleep per night.  Three hours just don’t cut it.  I can’t imagine how these girls kept going like energizer bunnies on 3 hours of sleep.  Amazes me.

The funnest part of this, is that I got to spend it with two of my children and despite them being embarrassed by some of my clutzy stunts, I think we all enjoyed being there together.  It was a party.  I would do it again in a heart beat, I just need time for everything to stop hurting.

This post is for my wonderful husband who I believe my sons take after.  I know my husband would have done something like this as a child.  Or at least I am going to pretend it came from his genes.

A couple of years ago, I was at the hospital with my father and I received a call from home.  When I answered the phone, my son said,”Jesse and I made the front page of the newspaper”.  Really, does any mother want to hear this? My first question was, “What the heck did you do?”  Panic set in because they are teens.

We have a habit of dressing up as a family for Halloween every year and the Fall before this incident, we all dressed up as Star Wars characters.  These two boys decided to be a clone and a stormtrooper.  This particular day was in the summer and it was about 100 degrees. They decided they were going to do something off the wall before school started again.  They dressed up in their costumes and decided to parade themselves up and down the street.  Well two journalists from our local paper were on their way to a nearby town to cover a field fire and saw these two and decided that this story had to be more interesting.

My first response was that I was embarrassed, then I laughed.  I had to give them props for doing something so crazy.  This particular week was the county fair and they always hand out free newspapers to everyone that comes. As we entered the gates, there all over the free paper were my two sons in all  their glory.  I later received a call from a group of Star War fans that dress up for different Charity events.  They were going to show up at my door and surprise my boys, Darth Vader and all but they couldn’t get everyone’s schedules to line up.  That would have been so funny.  My sons would have been all over that.

One of my assignments at school is to make a family website.  I have been learning Photoshop so I decided to have a little fun with the picture.  I put my two sons on Endor.  This of course, made them laugh and then I got schooled on who is not at certain places together in different Star Wars movies.  O.K.  I really don’t care about that, I just thought it was funny.  Two days ago, I added an Ewok for the fun of it.  I know it isn’t perfect, but for my first attempt at doing something like this in Photoshop, it didn’t turn out too bad.

Myhusband and kids are my life.  They make me laugh everyday and I would not change them in any way.  I love their little quirks and all the things that make each of them so different.  They all make me laugh in so many different ways.  My life would be so boring without them.

Well I have had it!  I decided that since this stupid weather in Utah can’t decide to warm up that I was going to think positive and put up my pool thinking the theory “When I wash my car, it will rain” will apply.  Only it will be “I will put up the pool so the sun will shine”.

This will probably be wishful thinking.  I will probably be scraping the snow off of it next week.  Today might be the warmest day in the next week to even swim and the water is freezing cold.

The official sign of summer is when the pool goes up.  In years past come March my kids would start asking, “When are we going to put up the pool?”.  Of course March in Utah is never a good time to put up a pool or even come within 15 ft. of an outdoor pool.  We are never that lucky.  Then it was April, then May and this year…no one has asked.  I was the one taking the initiative to do it.

I remember as a kid living in  Florida that everyday we went to the public pool.  It was great!  Anyone under 17 got in for free.  That was the life.  Of course it was about 115 degrees.  We would have died if we wouldn’t have been able to.  I think letting people in free to the pool was the city’s way of avoiding mass deaths during the summer months.  I remember swimming one day and seeing a guy do a belly flop off of an 80 ft. platform.  It didn’t kill him, but nearly.  He laid on the side of the pool for about 1 hour.  That single event made me never want to try high diving.

I truly believe that I am a fish in human clothing.  I love water and swimming.  This has not always been the case.  When I was 10 I almost drowned while living in Florida.  The scariest event of my life to date.  So it took some time for me to get over the fear of water.  I still do not like diving anymore.  If I don’t come up as fast as I should I start to panic.  Other than that, I am fine.  I even joined the high school swim team to get over my fear of water and to be able to have a class at school that I could play in the water for an hour.

I remember at age 17 we traveled to Florida for Christmas.  It was weird to see a Christmas without being in 5 feet of snow.  The weather was a balmy 72 degrees.  To Utahns 70 degrees in December is something you take advantage of.  So like a bunch of nut jobs, we went swimming in the ocean.  The Floridians walking the beach thought we were completely insane, but how many times to you get to swim in the ocean while living in Utah?  Oh, that would be  NONE!!!  I live near a carp invested river and that is the closest to a beach I get.  Of course we joke about our “beach front” property.  More like Redneck beach front property.  I truly believe that I have probably missing seeing one of those redneck houseboats floating down the river.

Got to love summer.  One of my favorite seasons of the year.  Although it does bring some sadness this year.  It will be the first summer for 19 years  that I will not be at home with my kids all day doing that things you do when it is warm. This brings sadness to my heart.  I am almost done with school and hopefully will not miss another summer with them again.  The realization of how hard this would be hit yesterday, their full day at home and I was at school.  It nearly brought me to tears.  Being a stay-at-home mom has been the best job I have had for 19 years.  No, it doesn’t pay much, but the benefits and awards so outweigh the monitarial compensation.  I have truly been blessed to do this for so many years.
